Layoffs Hit Bethesda Hard: Staff’s Tribute to Colleagues Pulled by HR

The gaming world has been buzzing with news of massive layoffs across Microsoft’s gaming division, and it seems Bethesda Game Studios, the creators behind epic titles like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, haven’t been spared. Recent reports indicate that Bethesda faced “significant” cuts as part of Xbox’s broader restructuring, which saw around 1,600 employees lose their jobs, with more expected in the coming years.

In the wake of these tough times, employees at Bethesda’s Rockville, Maryland office decided to do something heartwarming. They put together a “Celebration of Service” display, a beautiful tribute meant to honor their colleagues who were unfortunately impacted by the layoffs. It was a gesture of solidarity and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of their departing teammates.

However, this touching display was reportedly short-lived. According to the Bethesda Game Studios Union, the company’s Human Resources department stepped in “almost immediately” and forced its removal. The reason given? It was in a common area and deemed “inappropriate.” This explanation has raised more than a few eyebrows, especially since, as the union points out, common areas have been used for various team activities and displaying fan works in the past without any issues.

The union shared their disappointment, noting that the Maryland office was inspired by a similar, more permanent display set up by staff at Bethesda’s Dallas offices. The swift action by HR to dismantle the Rockville tribute has sparked considerable debate about employee morale and how companies handle sensitive situations like mass layoffs.

These layoffs have impacted many long-serving and highly skilled individuals. Among those affected was Christiane Meister, a senior character artist who contributed to every Elder Scrolls game from Morrowind all the way to Skyrim during her impressive 27-year tenure at the studio. The union highlighted that “dozens of programmers, artists, designers, and testers” lost their jobs, many of whom had worked at Bethesda for decades. This has naturally led to concerns among fans about the potential impact on the quality and development of future highly anticipated games, such as The Elder Scrolls 6.

It’s a challenging period for the gaming industry, and incidents like this highlight the human element behind game development. While companies often have policies, the way they are enforced, especially during difficult times, can significantly impact the remaining workforce’s morale and perception.
