Nvidia Surprises with Quiet Launch of 12 GB RTX 5070 Mobile GPU
This morning, while sipping on my chai and attempting to shake off the sleepiness, I noticed a new Nvidia driver update waiting in my system tray. Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to take a peek at the details. The update mainly focused on optimizations for Conan Exiles Enhanced, which I doubt many of us are rushing to play. But as I scrolled down, I stumbled upon some surprising news: the introduction of the “GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU 12 GB configuration.” Hold on, did I just read that right?
Yes, it looks like Nvidia has finally unveiled this previously leaked 12 GB version of the RTX 5070 mobile GPU, and the announcement was remarkably low-key. According to the folks at Nvidia, the demand for their GeForce RTX graphics cards remains strong, but the availability of memory is a different story. To tackle this, they’re rolling out the 12 GB variant which utilizes 24 Gb GDDR7 memory modules. This should help address some of the supply constraints.
They further elaborated, “This gives our partners access to an additional pool of memory to complement the 16 Gb G7 supply that currently ships with most GeForce GPUs.” The new addition will sit next to the existing 8 GB version, allowing manufacturers to offer a wider variety of laptops powered by the RTX 5070.
So what’s the deal with these modules? The 12 GB configuration is utilizing 3 GB (24 Gbit) GDDR7 modules, as opposed to the 2 GB versions found in the standard 8 GB model. This change means more memory without straying from the familiar specifications of the current RTX 5070, which still operates on the same 128-bit bus and maintains the same shader counts.
Now, let’s talk about performance. From my experience testing different graphics cards, I can tell you that the 12 GB variant could outperform the 8 GB version in certain titles, especially in memory-intensive games. The extra VRAM capacity in RTX 5070 laptops is definitely a plus, and if it encourages manufacturers to release more models featuring this mid-tier graphics chip, that’s a win-win for gamers.
However, there’s a catch. Manufacturers are still figuring out how to price these laptops with the new GPU. A laptop provider mentioned that under normal circumstances, this option could bridge the price gap between models. But with the current surge in graphics memory prices, the 12 GB RTX 5070 might end up costing almost as much as the existing RTX 5070 Ti. So, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
As for the desktop side of things, there were whispers about the much-anticipated RTX 50-series Super GPUs boasting increased VRAM as well. But things have been suspiciously quiet on that front lately. Earlier reports suggested that no new RTX graphics cards for gamers would emerge until 2026, which seems contradictory to this mobile GPU reveal.
There’s also been chatter about an RTX 5050 with 9 GB of VRAM, but that’s still in the rumor mill. If we do see a range of Super-variant RTX 50-series cards being unveiled, I can’t help but wonder if they’d also sneak into our systems through a driver update like this one. While I’m keeping an eye out for potential announcements, I wouldn’t hold my breath just yet.
