Overwatch Revamps Battle Passes: Old Rewards Reappear Permanently!
Great news for Overwatch fans! The upcoming season is set to shake things up by introducing a new way to enjoy old battle passes, making it easier to grab those rewards you may have missed out on. Starting in season 4, Blizzard is ready to “unvault” select battle passes, making them available for players to purchase once again. This means that every season, we can expect an old battle pass to return, halfway through its run, allowing gamers to snag rewards they may have missed previously.
However, there’s a catch. While the battle passes will be available, some of the goodies from the original passes won’t be included. Things like premium currency, player titles, and those coveted Mythic skins are off the table. Previously, new heroes were tied to battle pass tiers too, but it seems those have been swapped out for more generic rewards instead. Blizzard promises further details on how this will all work as we approach the mid-season mark next month.
The move to reduce the fear of missing out (FOMO) in battle passes is a welcome change for many players. While it’s a bit of a bummer that we won’t be able to access all old battle passes at once, having one return each season is definitely a step in the right direction. This model follows in the footsteps of other popular titles like Fortnite, allowing players to progress through rewards more flexibly.
The returning battle passes will sit alongside a brand new system that will debut in season 4, which features a more organized structure with multiple tracks of rewards. This allows you to pick and choose the cosmetics you want, rather than being forced into a linear progression. Additionally, you’ll have the option to swap out Legendary skins you don’t fancy for others from a curated list.
Blizzard reassured players that this new system won’t drag out the completion time for battle passes. The goal is to ensure players can earn the skins for the heroes they actually use, although it’s worth noting that the premium currency for Mythic skins will now only be available at the end of the progression rather than scattered throughout.
With Overwatch performing well for Blizzard, this shift in their monetization approach might reflect a more player-friendly direction. The season 4 trailer recently hinted at another collaboration with the popular K-pop group Le Sserafim, who will also be at this year’s BlizzCon, showcasing the studio’s awareness of lucrative partnerships.
Mark your calendars! Season 4, along with the new mech hero D.Mon, is set to launch on August 11. Get ready for some exciting changes in the Overwatch universe!
