In a chat with Nintendo Life, Lee reminisced about his early days at Bethesda, particularly his time as a play tester for Oblivion. He focused on the game’s AI behavior and discovered a unique mechanic tied to NPCs’ hunger. Instead of following the scripted quest line to eliminate a ship captain, Lee decided to take a different approach.
“I was playtesting and learning about the AI’s hunger mechanic, where characters search for food when they’re hungry,” Lee explained. “In one quest, you’re supposed to kill a captain on a boat, but I thought, ‘Can I exploit this somehow?'”
Lee devised a clever plan: he snuck aboard the ship, swiped all the food, and left a poisoned apple in the captain’s pocket. After completing his sneaky maneuver, he received a notification saying, “Quest Completed”; the captain was dead. Lee rushed to designer Emil Pagliarulo, amazed, saying, “I can’t believe you accounted for this!” to which Emil replied, “I didn’t, that was just the game systems working.”
This kind of player-driven interaction is what makes titles like Oblivion, Skyrim, and others so engaging and endlessly replayable. Lee reflected on how that quest has remained memorable for over two decades, praising Oblivion’s intricate systems that lead to unexpected and enjoyable outcomes. Sure, the infamous bugs that come with Bethesda games can sometimes break immersion, but they are also part of the quirky charm we’ve all come to love.
