Viggo Mortensen Supports Jamie Dornan as New Aragorn in Upcoming Lord of the Rings Prequel
In some exciting news from the world of Middle-earth, Andy Serkis has confirmed that Viggo Mortensen, the original actor for Aragorn, is fully on board with Jamie Dornan stepping into the iconic role for the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in the beloved original trilogy and is now directing this prequel, shared his thoughts during a recent chat on the podcast Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz.
When asked about how Dornan secured the role, Serkis hinted that filming is just around the corner, but he kept some details under wraps. He did, however, make it clear that Mortensen believes Aragorn is in capable hands with Dornan. “We’re absolutely thrilled that Jamie’s doing it, and so is Viggo,” Serkis noted.
The buzz around the new casting announcement has been building, especially since Mortensen expressed interest in reprising his role for the movie earlier this year. Serkis revealed the decision to recast Aragorn during an interview with a different outlet back in April, leaving fans a bit puzzled, especially considering that many of the original cast members were returning for this new venture. Alongside Serkis, fans can expect to see Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen returning as Frodo and Gandalf, respectively, while Dornan will take on the mantle of Strider.
Serkis elaborated on the intention behind the film, stating, “There was a desire for a series of returns to Middle-earth movies, and this seems to be a great way in.” He emphasized that this project aims to delve deeper into a more intimate story, focusing on the psychological aspects of a character who has become a cultural icon over the years, making its relevance quite significant.
As for the reasons behind Mortensen’s absence from the cast, details remain sparse. Other notable actors confirmed for the film include Kate Winslet as Marigol, Lee Woodall as Halvard, and Lee Pace as Thranduil.
The anticipation continues to grow as The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. While we wait for more updates, there’s plenty of speculation about whether Middle-earth might get a Harry Potter-style reboot.
