Micron Unveils Massive 512GB DDR5 RAM Module With Speeds Up to 9,200 MT/s

Micron has announced a massive 512GB DDR5 memory module, the largest-capacity DDR5 module the company has produced so far.

Before you start planning a ridiculous gaming PC upgrade, though, this isn’t meant for your desktop. The new memory is designed specifically for servers, data centers, and AI systems, where enormous amounts of RAM are increasingly becoming necessary.

Up to 12TB of RAM in a Single Server

The new 512GB DDR5 module can reach speeds of up to 9,200 MT/s. Micron says that a server equipped with 24 of these modules could have an incredible:

12TB of RAM.

That’s 12,288GB of system memory in a single machine.

The huge capacity is particularly useful for AI workloads, where keeping large models and datasets in memory can reduce the need to constantly move data between RAM and storage.

512GB While Using Just 16W

Capacity isn’t the only interesting part of Micron’s new module. The company is also highlighting a significant improvement in power efficiency.

According to Micron, a single 512GB module consumes around 16W of power. Providing the same capacity using four 128GB modules would consume approximately 44.2W.

That difference might not sound particularly important for a normal PC, but across servers containing dozens of memory modules — and data centers containing thousands of servers — reducing memory power consumption can make a substantial difference.

It also allows server manufacturers to pack more memory into systems without increasing power and cooling requirements at the same rate.

Coming in 2027

Don’t expect to see these modules appearing immediately. Micron expects the new 512GB DDR5 modules to be production-ready in 2027, with volume production currently planned for the second half of the year.

The module is another example of just how quickly memory requirements are increasing as companies build larger AI infrastructure.

And no, your gaming PC isn’t getting a 512GB RAM stick anytime soon.
